How to Raise a Basement Floor Drain

A basement floor drain is an essential part of any home's plumbing system, allowing water to flow away from the foundation and preventing flooding. Over time, however, floor drains can become clogged or damaged, causing water to back up into the basement. If your basement floor drain is not draining properly, you may need to raise it.

Raising a basement floor drain is a relatively simple process that can be completed in a few hours. However, it is important to take the proper steps to ensure that the drain is installed correctly and will not leak. Here are the steps on how to raise a basement floor drain:

1. Gather your materials.

You will need the following materials to raise a basement floor drain:

  • A new floor drain
  • A hacksaw
  • A pipe wrench
  • PVC cement
  • A level
  • A caulk gun
  • Caulk

2. Turn off the water supply to the floor drain.

Locate the water supply valve for the floor drain and turn it off. This will prevent water from flowing out of the drain while you are working.

3. Remove the old floor drain.

Use a hacksaw to cut the PVC pipe that is connected to the old floor drain. Once the pipe is cut, you can remove the old floor drain by unscrewing it from the drainpipe.

4. Install the new floor drain.

Apply a bead of PVC cement to the end of the drainpipe and insert the new floor drain. Tighten the floor drain into place using a pipe wrench.

5. Level the floor drain.

Use a level to ensure that the floor drain is level. If the floor drain is not level, water will not drain properly and may cause flooding.

6. Caulk around the floor drain.

Apply a bead of caulk around the base of the floor drain to seal it and prevent leaks.

7. Turn on the water supply to the floor drain.

Turn on the water supply valve for the floor drain and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, the floor drain has been successfully raised.

Raising a basement floor drain is a relatively simple process that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can ensure that the drain is installed correctly and will not leak.
